Special Education
I grew up on the island and dreamed of being a teacher but chose a different path. Raising a child who has ASD along with an intellectual disability taught me the parent side of Special Education. I became an Ed Tech III several years ago and was encouraged to apply for the Special Education teaching position a few years ago. To say that I love my job and enjoy my time supporting the students is an understatement. Every day I learn from them, learn more about them, and celebrate every accomplishment with them. The Special Education department is here to support students who qualify for services. Students are supported during academics as needed and in the Resource Room during Specially Designed Instruction. They are met where they are and assisted as they expand their knowledge and abilities. If you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact me.
My name is Katharine Schrader and I am a special education teacher. My husband and I have moved many times over the years due to his military career. We currently live in Ellsworth and plan to eventually retire in Maine. I have many years of experience teaching all levels of special education in several states. I have particularly enjoyed my time working with the children in both of the Deer Isle-Stonington Schools. I spent the last seven years working with students at the Deer Isle-Stonington Elementary School. This year, I moved to the high school. I am excited to be developing the high school’s new Life Skills program, which is designed to help students who may need more educational support to complete their high school career. I am pleased to be able to help prepare our children for their next steps in life and become contributing members of their families and communities.
